Over the past decade, the Burkart lab has developed several technologies to study secondary metabolites and their producer organisms. Our area of focus is the enzymatic megasynthases responsible for synthesizing fatty acids, polyketides, and non-ribosomal peptides. Using various chemical, biochemical, metabolomic, and proteomic techniques, we have developed methodologies to uncover protein-protein interactions that occur between domains of these enzymatic complexes. Applications of such technologies include drug discovery, renewable energy, and biomaterials.
